19 Sep How to Set Your Thermostat for Travel
The holiday travel season is already underway, and no family wants to pay to heat their home while they are on vacation. Though it may seem logical to turn the thermostat completely off while away for an extended period, this is one of the worst things homeowners can do to their HVAC systems. As the photo above demonstrates, this family turned their HVAC unit off while traveling during the winter, causing it to freeze, and costing them far more in repairs than if they had simply set the heat a few degrees lower.
HVAC systems are designed to maintain comfortable and consistent temperatures in a home. While away for vacation, it is not necessary to heat or cool a home as much as you would when you are home; however, we strongly recommend you only adjust thermostat by 5 degrees when you travel. In the summer, you should adjust your thermostat up 5 degrees and down 5 degrees in winter. This practice will ensure that you experience savings on your energy bill and help preserve the life of your HVAC system.
